libModSecurity3: Segfault on query strings with a single character when using 't:hexDecode' Vulnerability Overview Under specific configurations, a single character in a query string is sufficient to cause a segmentation fault (segfault). This can be exploited using a simple one-line bash script, resulting in a denial of service. This issue affects all versions of libModSecurity3 and ModSecurity2 (Apache is not affected). Affected Versions Affected versions: All versions Unpatched versions: None Remediation No fix is currently available. Proof of Concept (PoC) Create Rule Send Request and Check for Segfault Add Extra Characters to Avoid Segfault Impact A simple one-line command is sufficient to crash all worker processes, preventing legitimate users from accessing the service. When the attack stops, the worker processes will recover from the segmentation fault.
