Vulnerability Summary: SMF Crash Vulnerability (Issue #4452) Vulnerability Overview In the 5G Core Network Element SMF (Session Management Function), receiving a PDU session modification request via the interface can cause the SMF process to crash if the QoS flow description contains an invalid bitrate unit. The vulnerability stems from the code directly using an unvalidated 3-byte bitrate structure when parsing in . This causes the function to trigger an when it encounters an unknown unit. Impact Scope Affected Component: Open5GS SMF module. Trigger Condition: An attacker sends an HTTP POST request to the SMF containing a malicious payload. Consequence: The SMF process terminates abnormally (Crash), resulting in service unavailability (Denial of Service). Remediation Add pre-validation logic to the function. Before parsing QoS flow parameters, verify the validity of each parameter identifier and the bitrate unit. If the unit is invalid, return an HTTP 400 error directly to avoid triggering the crash.
