CI/CD Credential Management Vulnerability & Hardening Guide

Key Information Summary: OWASP Top 10 CI/CD Security Risks Vulnerability Overview Core Risk: Improper management of credentials (secrets) within the CI/CD pipeline is the primary threat to CI/CD security. Primary Vulnerability Types: - Hardcoded Credentials - Credential Leakage - Lack of Credential Rotation - Insecure Credential Storage - Excessive Credential Permissions Scope of Impact: - Affects all development teams utilizing CI/CD pipelines - May result in the entire CI/CD pipeline being taken over by an attacker - Can trigger Supply Chain Attacks - May lead to production environment compromise Common Attack Vectors: - Credentials leaked through CI/CD pipeline logs - Credentials leaked through CI/CD pipeline configuration - Credentials leaked through CI/CD pipeline plugins - Credentials leaked through CI/CD pipeline environment variables Remediation Strategies Credential Management Best Practices: - Utilize dedicated credential management services (e.g., HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager) - Implement credential rotation policies - Minimize credential permissions - Avoid hardcoding credentials in code - Store credentials using environment variables or a credential management service - Conduct regular audits of credential usage Technical Measures: - Integrate a credential management service within the CI/CD pipeline - Implement encrypted storage for credentials - Use short-lived credentials - Enforce access controls for credentials - Monitor credential usage Process Measures: - Establish a credential management workflow - Perform regular credential audits - Implement credential rotation - Train developers on credential management best practices POC/Exploit Code The page does not include specific POC code or exploit code blocks.
