Apache Log4j2 Deserialization RCE (Log4Shell) Advisory

Vulnerability Key Information Summary Vulnerability Overview Vulnerability Name: Log4j2 Deserialization Vulnerability (Log4Shell) Vulnerability Type: Deserialization Vulnerability Affected Component: Apache Log4j 2.x logging library Core Issue: When Log4j2 processes log messages, it parses strings containing specific placeholders (e.g., ). Attackers can exploit this to trigger JNDI lookups, achieving Remote Code Execution (RCE). Impact Scope Affected Versions: Apache Log4j 2.0 through 2.14.1 (2.15.0 fixed the primary issue, while 2.16.0 addressed remaining risks) Affected Scenarios: All applications that use Log4j2 to log user-controllable inputs (such as HTTP headers, parameters, and bodies), including web applications, microservices, and middleware. Risk Level: Critical (CVSS 10.0), exploitable remotely without authentication. Remediation Solutions 1. Version Upgrade: Upgrade Log4j to 2.17.1 (or at least 2.16.0) to completely eliminate deserialization risks. 2. Temporary Mitigations (if immediate upgrade is not possible): - Set the system property - Or set the environment variable - Configure in 3. Network-Level Defense: Block requests containing or in firewalls/WAFs to intercept external JNDI lookups. 4. Code-Level Defense: Filter or sanitize user inputs to prevent passing unsanitized strings directly into logging methods like . POC / Exploit Code > Note: This page is an Elastic blog article titled "Data access: the hidden cost of security vendor lock-in," which primarily discusses data portability and vendor lock-in issues in security platforms. It does not directly include POC code for the Log4j2 vulnerability. The POC above represents the standard exploitation method for the Log4j2 vulnerability, provided for reference.
